A small trip in search of those hidden but nevertheless astonishing sites.
First day: Arrival and accommodation in a 3 stars hotel (or 4 stars) in the afternoon. Welcome cocktail. Dinner and overnight.
Second day: Right after breakfast we'll be leaving for Bagno Vignoni. A town whose peculiarity is most unique. The piazza is a pool of warm thermal water, and was historically used to heal people and cattle (it was divided in 2 parts). Saint Catherine of Siena lived here for a little while. Pilgrims following the Franciscan path to Rome used to stop here in order to rest. Our trip will then continue throughout the Val d'Orcia, Tuscan Nature Park, crossed by the old Cassia, and then on to Radicofani. Before getting back to Chianciano, we'll stop in Spedaletto. Historically, it was a hospital where sick and tired pilgrims were admitted. Return to the hotel for lunch, while in the afternoon our trip will proceed to Cetona, also called "the internal Portofino" due to the beauty of its landscapes and its enchanting position. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Third day: We'll be leaving for Siena straight after breakfast. Guided city tour. In the Palazzo Pubblico we'll have the chance to admire Ambrogio Lorenzetti's wall painting "effetto del buon governo", which is almost like a modern picture of the Franciscan path in the year 1338/40. We'll then have a medieval lunch in a characteristic trattoria. Enjoy some leisure time in the afternoon in order to continue your visit of the city. Return to Chianciano for dinner and overnight stay.
Fourth day: Right after breakfast we'll be heading to Sant'Antimo's Abbey, one of Tuscany's bigger ones, of which it was legendarily said that it was built by Charles the Great. It also was a resting point for pilgrims, and even nowadays, the friars celebrate the holy mass including Gregorian chants. After having attended the mass we'll then be moving on to Montalcino, nice little old town where a marvelous microclimate gives birth to one of the best red wines in the world, the Brunello di Montalcino. We'll have a wine tasting before returning back to Chianciano to have lunch at the hotel. Departure.
